Intern Pastor Esthel Marie is in training to become a pastor in the ELCA.  She is enrolled in Masters of Divinity Expedited (MDivX) program at Luther Seminary in Minnesota, a long distance intensive program. This program will allow her to be at Atonement during her internship, while at the same time taking classes online.  Before enrolling into this amazing program, she served at Atonement as an usher, office volunteer, assisted with the youth, and was chair of the Hispanic Ministry at Atonement, and Lay Developer of our outreach, Todos Unidos en Cristo.  She holds a Bachelors in Business Management from the University of Phoenix.  Before coming to Atonement, she was raised Roman Catholic.

Growing up in Puerto Rico, my grandparents were an influential part of my life.  They took me and my brothers to church every Sunday.  I remember sitting there and wondering why was I there.  As I grew up so did my distance from the church.  I wanted more, but didn't know what "more" was.  In those moments where I distanced myself from the church and God, I questioned my beliefs.  But yet, I felt the "more" I was looking for was holding me up and telling me to hold on.

When I moved to Florida in 2001, I rekindled my church life in the Roman Catholic church.  Yet, that feeling of wanting more returned.  But I didn't know what "more" was.  In 2005 my brother was murdered in Puerto Rico and so was my belief in God.  Anger filled the space in my heart that once was filled by curiosity and wanting more.  10 Years later is when I stepped back into the church on my terms.  In 2015 I got married at Atonement by Pastor Scott Lindner.  When I stepped through the doors of Atonement that feeling of wanting more returned.  But this time it was different.  This time I knew what "more" was.

Now I know that God has been calling me since I was a little child to do His work.  He has been calling me to share his love, mercy, and grace.  Today, I am proud to say that I have learned what I was looking for, but still have a long way to go.  With God and my church by my side all things are possible.
