God's Works Our Hands
It's almost that time of year for "God's Work Our Hands"! Every year on the second Sunday in September we have a workday. "This day is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. Service activities offer an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: that all of life in Jesus Christ – every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of life – flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God’s grace." (Statement from ELCA website).
This year on September 13, 2020, we are challenged with how to gather as a church and celebrate who we are by serving our neighbor. We have many opportunities to serve our neighbors from a distance. There are many opportunities to serve our neighbors safely, but we narrowed it down to one that best speaks to what is happening in our world today. That is why we are partnering with a local animal shelter. This animal shelter not only rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes animals in our community, but also helps the community by distributing dog and cat food to those that cannot afford it right now. Just like our food pantry at Atonement, they distribute food for animals on a weekly basis.
How can you help? This is how you can help. They are asking for dog and cat food, toys that are made of rubber or plastic (that way they can disinfect them), kitten replacement formula, and kitten feeding bottle kits.
When can we drop it off? On August 22nd from 11 am-2 pm, August 23rd from 1 pm-4 pm, September 5th 11 am-2 pm, and September 6th from 1 pm-4 pm.
I will be at church accepting donations. All you have to do is come down and I will take it.
When are the donations going to be taken to the shelter? On September 10th. I and someone else will be driving to the shelter to drop off all the donations. Unfortunately, they have a limit on how many people they are allowing in their premises due to COVID-19.
Can I just give you money? Yes, you can. On the same days that I will be accepting the donations, I will be accepting cash donations. I will be going afterward to the store and purchasing whatever is needed the most.
Can I be the other person going to deliver the donations? Possibly! We have a spot open for someone to come along and help deliver the donations. When you come in to drop off the donations, all you have to do is tell me to add your name to the drawing. We will be randomly selecting one person to accompany me on this day.
When is the person going to be selected? The drawing will happen on September 6th after all the donations have been gathered. The winner will be notified the same day.
Hope to see you all there!
