WELCA’s Christmas projects are two-fold. 1) Reverse Advent Calendar as a joint effort with our Helping Hands Food Pantry and 2) Guardian ad Litem gift card project.
What is the Guardian ad Litem program? It is a partnership of trained advocates appointed by the court to represent children in foster care that have been removed from their home because of abuse, abandonment or neglect. GALs are their support system and their voice in court.
Last year Cheryl Jefts introduced the program to WELCA. She said that the program receives donated toys for the younger children at Christmas, but Christmas gifts for teens are lacking. She asked for ideas of how WELCA could help. After discussion, it was decided that the members would donate $25 Walmart gift cards for the teens to shop. Fifty-four $25 Walmart gift cards were provided by the WELCA members & through the WELCA treasury as Christmas gifts for the teens in the program.
Jan Gerle, who is now a Guardian ad Litem advocate, reported that these cards were so appreciated. WELCA is continuing this project this year. This year with the ever-growing needs we are asking you, the congregation, to help us. Our goal is 100 cards.
Please consider purchasing a $25 Walmart gift card for the teens in foster care, but any amount would be greatly appreciated so we can reach our goal. Checks can be made out to Atonement but designate it for WELCA in the memo line.
The deadline for donating is December 4th. Please place donated cards/checks/money in an envelope marked WELCA and place it in the donation basket on November 27th or December 4th. Or you may wish to mail to the church at 29617 FL-54, Wesley Chapel, FL 33543 to the attention of WELCA or stop by the office and drop it off.
We know this is late notice with the time-frame. Last year we delivered the cards later in the month. Help provide gift cards for these teens in foster care. Thank you.
