On February 1, 2023, Dale Roland Schmidt, a proud career veteran of The United States Coast Guard, passed away in Catonsville, Maryland. He was the loving husband of the late Mary Louise Schmidt (nee Helbing); devoted father of Lisa Woodard and Jeffrey Schmidt; loving grandfather of Kristin Woodard, Brittany Schmidt. Shaine Woodard, Zachary Schmidt, and the dear great-grandfather of Riley Godbout, Porter Godbout, Sophia Lizzi, Braylen Schmidt, McKenna Schmidt, Wesley Schmidt and Sophia Schmidt.
Dale was born in Wisconsin and met the love of his life Mary in 6th grade. They wed in 1957 and lived a beautiful retirement with their love of golf and traveling all over the world.
Dale served his country for 30 years and it all started with him hitchhiking to California and enlisting in the Coast Guard at the age of 18. Most of his career was centered around search and rescue and search and seizure. He flew C-130s and helicopters for most of his career and his early career was spent on icebreakers in the Antarctica. He did a tour in Puerto Rico as Commanding Officer of the base located at the Air Station of Borinquen. His many medals included CG Commendation medal with “O” device/gold star, Humanitarian Service Medal, Antarctica Service Medal, Arctic Service Medal, CG Good Conduct Medal with two Bronze Stars, National Defense Service Medal, Achievement Medal, Letter of Commendation Ribbon with “O” Device and Marksman pistol ribbon.
The family received friends at the family-owned Candle Light Funeral Home, 1835 Frederick Road, Catonsville, MD (21228) on Saturday, February 11, 2023 from 10 am until 11 am, Memorial services began at 11 am. Inurnment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
Dale and Mary Schmidt joined Atonement Lutheran Church of Wesley Chapel, Florida on March 3, 2013. Mary passed away October 9, 2013. Today we rejoice that they are reunited at the marriage feast that has no end (Revelation 19).
